Unloading coil from a decoiler
How to secure the current coil for removal and use certified lifting equipment to unload it
Operators must remove a coil when it is used up or when the roll-former is set up with the wrong steel required for a job.
DANGER! Handling steel coils presents serious risk of injury due to steel weight and machinery. To reduce risk of injury:
-
Staff must be trained in the procedures and on the equipment for moving, loading, and unloading coils.
-
All lifting equipment must be certified to safely lift the maximum coil weight used in your operation.
-
Coils must be securely strapped or restrained before moving or loading. This prevents sudden unwinding of the coiled steel, which can cause serious injury.
DANGER! Always wear protective boots, cut-resistant gloves, and hi-vis clothing when handling or moving steel coils.
Note – tools required: clamp, cutting tool (shears, electric nibbler), decoiler winder handle (stored on decoiler), strap, ratchet.
Secure the currnet coil
Make sure steel strip is separated from the roll-former at the Infeed before proceeding. (See Cutting current steel at infeed in Removing current steel from roll-former for details.)
With the machine in an Emergency Stop state, and a clamp ready for strapping the steel:
1. Loosen the three decoiler safety guard locking nuts.

2. Rotate safety guard to align locking bolts with holes, then pull safety guard back to remove it.

3. Push decoiler to wind up the steel strip.

4. Clamp the end of the steel strip to the coil.

5. Strap in the steel strip and tighten with a ratchet.

Unload the current coil
Once the steel strip is secured, you can unload the coil.
NOTE! The following includes illustrations with a travelling gantry and electric hoist. Ask your organization for specific instructions if you are using other equipment.
1. Rotate the decoiler mandrel until the backplate's flat side and cut-out face up.

2. Thread a strop through the coil, attach to lifting equipment, and lift with equipment until strop is taut.

3. Use the decoiler winder handle to collapse (loosen) the mandrel shoe plates. (Lift coil to keep strop taut, if necessary). Turn handle counterclockwise until there is enough space for coil to pass.

4. Lift coil and move to storage.

Now you can load a new coil.
